Six intrepid raptor enthusiasts climbed to the top of Mount Aeneas in the Jewel Basin on September 17, to the site of the Jewel Basin Hawk Watch. There they joined primary Hawk Watch observer Dan Casey to help count migrating hawks as they pass by the high Aeneas ridge.

Although the trip was rained out early, the participants got to see a handful of southbound hawks come into the owl decoy at close range.

And having learned how to get there, they are ready to become part of the Jewel Basin Hawk Watch team.

Field trip leader Cory Davis plans to organize a similar trip next year. Watch the September 2017 Pileated Post for the date and time.
